Our school was originally known as Joyce's School of Massage and was located in Clyde, Alberta. Joyce's School of Massage was instrumental in the development and quality of many of the Massage Industry's current practitioners.
In 2002 the school was renamed the Northern Institute of Massage Therapy Incorporated and was centrally relocated to Red Deer, Alberta. The unique learning format and comprehensive program content has been retained. The program content is constantly being upgraded to reflect current changes in the Massage Industry.
The Northern Institute of Massage Therapy Inc's intent is to continue the legacy of Joyce Raiwet's teachings by providing the student with a massage based curriculum taught by experienced massage therapists. This will provide our students with the ability to become fully competent Massage Therapists in their own right.

WHAT IS A MASSAGE?
Massage is by far one of the oldest forms of healing, having been employed by the Chinese thousands of years before the birth of Christ. Over the years, it has been used both for relaxation and for therapeutic purposes.
Today, we use the term Therapeutic Massage to distinguish corrective techniques from the more generalized Basic Relaxation Massage that is applied primarily for its relaxing effects. There are numerous specialized applications of massage therapy which can play an important role in the restoration and maintenance of bodily health and fitness.
WHAT DOES A THERAPIST NEED TO LEARN?
Massage is a highly skilled art, performed only through the hands of a competent practitioner. It is an art that can only be acquired by thorough training, which provides both meticulous instruction and individualized guidance.
A therapist needs to possess both a thorough knowledge of human anatomy and physiology, and the ability to use the hands skillfully in performing the techniques of massage. A therapist can only appreciate the true value of massage therapy through understanding the systems of the body. Equally important, the therapist trained in these subjects will also be able to identify those conditions where massage would definitely not be advisable.
Applicants must be willing to study and to be committed to spending the time necessary to obtain the required skills of a successful therapist. At the Northern Institute students should be prepared to commit an average of 30 hours per week to home study.
Your enrollment in the Northern Institute of Massage Therapy Inc. offers you an introduction to this fascinating and rewarding work. Whether it is your ultimate aim to seek employment as a massage therapist in an established center, or you intend to open your own practice the Northern Institute of Massage Therapy Inc. can help you achieve your dreams.
